Enter the Chickens

It has been a long time, garden blog, hasn't it? It's my fault, really. It was just kind of painful to think about gardening, without thinking of all that I had lost. My giant pine cross section and the neat old tractor couldn't come with when we moved, so they were left behind, along with the bench and the catpost (buried for everyone's protection). I needed some time not to think about it all, and if nothing else, the heat of the summer gave me a good excuse not to do any gardening. We moved a few survivors into the new ground, and for a few months, there wasn't too much to write about.

But fall has finally come to California. The wind comes tearing through the yard and we've even had a storm or two. And it's time to start a really great garden. I've got a ton of notes and ideas to sort through, but I'm most excited about the fact that we're chicken farmers. More to follow soon, but in the meantime, enjoy the pictures ~

we had chickens at my great grandfather's farmhouse growing up - cuddling up with all the baby chicks in the springtime is one of my favorite memories :)
